Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series: The Last Naturally Aspirated AMG — Import Before They're Gone

In September 2020, Mercedes-AMG revealed the GT Black Series. It held the production car Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record at 6:43.616. It produced 730hp from a flat-plane crank 4.0L V8 — the most powerful naturally aspirated AMG engine ever built. And only 900 were produced.

This is, without question, one of the most significant collector car opportunities of the decade.

Why the Black Series Is Special

The Engine

The AMG GT Black Series uses a flat-plane crankshaft version of AMG's M178 4.0L V8. Flat-plane cranks allow higher revs and faster throttle response — at the cost of more vibration. It revs to 8,000rpm and sounds extraordinary.

730hp. 800Nm of torque. In a car weighing 1,625kg.

The Aerodynamics

The front splitter, dive planes, giant rear wing, and underbody diffuser generate over 400kg of downforce at maximum speed. The wing is manually adjustable in three positions.

The Heritage

The Black Series name carries enormous significance within AMG. Previous Black Series cars — SLS Black, SL65 Black, C63 Black — are all appreciating collector cars. The GT Black Series is the last.

The Investment Case

With the automotive industry's transition to electrification, naturally aspirated high-revving V8 supercars are functionally extinct. The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is almost certainly the last of its kind.

Current market prices:

  • New MSRP (2021): $335,000
  • Current market (2025): $420,000–$580,000
  • Projected (2030): Conservative estimates suggest $600,000–$900,000

In three years, values have already increased 25–70% depending on specification.

Where to Find One

United States: The largest GT Black Series market. 300+ units were allocated to US dealers. Good used inventory, well-documented history.

Germany: Home market. Some dealer and private sales available.

UAE: Limited allocation but some examples available through specialist dealers.

Japan: Ultra-low mileage examples beginning to appear as Japanese collectors move on.

Specification Checklist

  • Yellow Seat Belts: Standard on most, but verify
  • Carbon Ceramic Brakes: Significant performance and value enhancement
  • AMG Track Package: Data logger, roll bar protection — adds appeal
  • Manual wing setting photos: Verify all three positions function correctly
  • Service history: All service must be at AMG-authorised dealer

Import Example: USA to UAE

  • Purchase price (USA): $490,000
  • Export + container shipping: $8,500
  • UAE duty (5%) + VAT (5%): $49,850
  • Compliance: $2,500
  • Agent fee: $14,700
  • Total landed UAE: approximately $566,000

Comparable UAE dealer asking: $620,000+.

The Verdict

If you have the opportunity to import a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series in 2025, do it. The combination of extreme performance, limited production, historical significance, and the end of the naturally aspirated era makes this one of the most compelling collector car investments available.
